Content

The aim of the unit is to train the participants on the assistive technologies available for the visually impaired persons.

Objectives

Attendants will be able to:

• Research and learn about the available assistive technology.

• Try out a part of it to experience how it works.

• Work together with a person with visual impairments if they encounter an issue with their assistive technology equipment and find alternative ways to achieve a task.

Advice for the organiser

The organiser should know in advance which type of devices are preferred by the participants and should be familiar with the basic operation of them.

• Try to focus on the functionality of the tools more than in technical aspects.

• Encourage the participants to help one another and share their findings.

• Do not take the participants’ knowledge about the use of the assistive technology for granted. Double-check their development in the use of the tools.

Learning methodologies

Mini lectures, class discussions, hands-on activities, simulations.

Resources available/ needed

• Smartphones, tablets or laptops for all the participants.

• Assistive technology software installed (if applicable).

• Assistive technology hardware (optional).

• A good quality WiFi network with a reliable Internet connection.

• Chairs with desk attached or U-shaped table with chairs for all the participants.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the workshop session the participant shall:

Knowledge

• Identify the various types of assistive technology (both hardware and software)

Skills

• A basic use of some of the assistive technology software and/or hardware

Competences

• Be especially able to cooperate/collaborate with a co-worker with visual impairment in cases there are problems with their assistive technology software/hardware (not in a technical aspect but through finding alternatives that work in a mutually effective way)
